Fuseli's 'The Nightmare' was reenacted in Ken Russell's 1986 film 'Gothic', a fictional tale about Mary Shelley's conception of the story of 'Frankenstein' at Lord Byron's estate.
ReplyDeletePlayed by Natasha Richardson, Mary Shelley sees Fuseli's 'The Nightmare' and imagines she is the woman in the painting. On top of her is Kiran Shah (who was Elijah Wood's scale double in 'The Lord of The Rings' trilogy) credited as the Fuseli Monster.
This scene also serves as the cover art for the film.
