Ludger tom Ring the Younger, Christ Blessing, Sorrounded by a Donor and His Family, 1575-1580, oil on wood.

This splendid piece was created during the Renaissance in Germany, however religious. It shows that Christ is in the middle of an unidentified family of five. According to the description that this is a wedding of the man on the left wing and the women, who was only eighteen. Christ was made up to be in the middle as one of the witnesses. His fingers; thumb, index, and middle; is a sign of a cross in a Catholic Church, which means Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The remain two fingers represents human and divine nature of Jesus Christ.
The figures, including Christ; the cross on the table; the frames; and the wall behind the figures created many vertical and horizontal lines and formed a grid-lines-like images. The curtain behind Christ forms a rectangular shape and makes the focus point on the Christ. The invisible grid lines makes this painting a feel of well organized, clean, and comfort, however, stiff figures, lack of expressions.
The use of colors of this piece is pretty superior, although the figures’ faces look pale and the color of their clothes look washed out due to the light source. However, they look like they were being photographed in the modern time since the light source(flash) are coming from the viewer(camera). So the viewer might be one of the witnesses in the wedding. The mid-ground and background is slightly darker than the people at the foreground, so that the figures will be more prominence.
Although this is a 2D painting, it definitely gives viewer a feeling of 3D. The chin of the woman on the right, the wrinkles of Christ’s shirt and curtain behind him, beard, and the fur of jacket. Even though we can’t touch it, we can feel the form and texture of them.
